Bill Lanzen entered the U.S. Navy via OCS after graduation from UMass. He says,

'I was on active duty for 5 years, 1962-1967. Upon completion of training at Pensacola and Norfolk, my assignment during the first two years was to the US Naval Air Station at Argentia,Newfoundland where I was the staff intelligence officer.  This was during the Cuban missile crisis and my team received recognition for one of the earliest identifications of Soviet ships transporting missiles to Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis.   I was subsequently transferred to Atlantic Fleet Headquarters in Norfolk, VA and over the next three years served in several similar roles both in Norfolk and at the Pentagon. I left the service in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant.'
