Subject: Berkshire Carousel is finally done after 11 years...come join us next week!
Date: June 24, 2016
Dear Friends,
The project that Jackie and I backed and designed to engage people from my home town , Pittsfield, MA, is complete! The Berkshire Carousel has involved over 400 volunteers from Western, MA who have hand carved and painted the first classical wooden carousel made in Massachusetts in over 100 years. It was designed to replicate the carving styles of the top 20 artists who came to America between 1880 and 1930 and initially carved the interiors of churches and synagogues before moving onto carousels. Much more than an amusement ride, Berkshire Carousel is an incredible work of art and the organization of people from a community of 50,000 that was hit hard by the loss of 12,000 jobs when its major employer, the General Electric Co.left. It took 11 years to build the carousel and was accomplished with no public monies. Berkshire Carousel will have its official opening ceremonies a week from today. Pittsfield is just over three hours from NYC, two hours from New Haven and Boston and an hour from Springfield, MA and Albany, NY. Jackie and I will be there most of the days of operation…ALL DAY! We would love to see you. Bring your kids and/or grand kids and spend a day in the beautiful Berkshires. If you live too far and can’t make it, tell your friends who live closer. We understand.
Peace, and health,
Jim
