Bill Lanzen entered the U.S. Navy via OCS after graduation from UMass. He says,
'I was on active duty for 5 years, 1962-1967. Upon completion of training at Pensacola and Norfolk, my assignment during the first two years was to the US Naval Air Station at Argentia,Newfoundland where I was the staff intelligence officer. Â This was during the Cuban missile crisis and my team received recognition for one of the earliest identifications of Soviet ships transporting missiles to Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis. Â I was subsequently transferred to Atlantic Fleet Headquarters in Norfolk, VA and over the next three years served in several similar roles both in Norfolk and at the Pentagon. I left the service in 1967 with the rank of Lieutenant.' Â
