Frank Murphy was awarded a scholarship and was commissioned in the US Navy upon graduation from Holy Cross. Â His service started on USS Rooks (DD804) with DesRon 20 doing ASW in the Atlantic (sometimes with Venti on the Essex) until decommissioned a year later (6/62,) then to USS Mills (DER-383) for ASW, surveillance work on the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap and around Cuba, and a year long deployment in support of Operation Deep Freeze off Antarctica. Â Circumnavigated the globe as navigator my last year (the 4th) at sea (to New Zealand and the Antarctic via Panama, South America, and Tahiti. Â Home via Australia, Suez, the Med and Northern Europe. Both circles, Equator, Prime and 180th Meridians.) Â Great job, great shipmates. Â Then to NYC for two years ashore working with the Reserves. Â Remember the old recruiting slogan:'Join the Navy and see the world'? Â I really did. Frank left the Navy in 1967 with the rank of LT.
