If the First Church of Christ, Congregational, left, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, right, flanking Pittsfield’s former Town Hall on Park Square in the 1850s, look closer than they do today, that’s because they were. The 1832 St. Stephen’s edifice at right above, was razed in 1889 and replaced by the present church built on the adjacent lot to the east. That left space for Allen Street to pass between the new church and Town Hall (now Berkshire Bank), as it does today, in the picture on the right of this one.
