The Thomas Allen Memorial, shown above in the early 20th century, is a 42-foot obelisk of polished red marble erected in 1885 in the High Grove secton of Pittsfield Cemetery. Quarried in Missouri where Allen (1813-1882), a Pittsfield native and railroad builder, served as a congressman, the stone had six feet break off just before it was to be transported, bringing it to its current size.
