Park Square in Pittsfield would have looked very different if this 1939 design by Pittsfield architect J. R. Hampson had progressed. It was one of a number of unsuccessful proposals to replace the deteriorating Town Hall, built in 1832. Finally, the dity and feceral government agreed to a land swap that allowed the city to take over the former Allen Street post office for a city hall in 1968, while a new post office went up on city land on First Street.
