The West Block at West Street and Clapp Avenue in Pittsfield, shown above in 1942, was one of a number of 19th-century business blocks demolished in the 1960's to clear the way for urban renewal. Built in 1894 by the West brothers - Charles, Frederick, Frank and John - it temporarily housed the city's high school classes after the old high school on South Street Burned in 1895. Tenants in 1942 included the Pickwick Hotel and Restaurant, Dearstyle Bros., the John S. Wolfe Company, West Street Newsroon, American Foods, Inc. and the Abrams Fruit Store.
