The walls came tumbling down at the former Mount Carmel School on Fenn Street in Pittsfield on June 4, 1979, as a Petricca Construction crew began demolition to make room for a parish parking lot. Built as Read School School in 1884, it was the oldest of the city's brick school buildings. Age and wear had taken their toll. Decommissioned as a public school in 1952, it was bought by the church in 1954 for $38,000. It was last used for parochial pupils in 1976 under the name Catholic Central Elementary School
