VE Day, victory in Europe in World War II. This was the first of several impromptu parades to celebrate it. These war workers (mostly women) marched down East Street in Pittsfield and right through City Hall, in the front door and out the back, on May 8, 1945. Here they are marching on South Street, past the intersection with West Housatonic Street and the Berkshire Hardware building. On that morning, the city's elm trees were still alive and budding into leaf.
