The Allen House on East Street, shown above in 1984, was built in 1895 in a Queen Anne style by William Russell Allen. The house became a maternity hospital and then a nurses' residence for the former St. Luke's Hospital next door. It has been vacant since 1978. The state bought the house as part of a package with the hospital building and - finding no uses for it - sealed it up. The hospital became the Providence Court apartments for the elderly. The underbrush, seen in the picture to the right of this one, in a 2009 view, will be removed from around the historic house and other improvements totaling $180,000 will be made to the state-owned mansion.
