Frank Murphy was awarded a scholarship and was commissioned in the US Navy upon graduation from Holy Cross.  His service started on USS Rooks (DD804) with DesRon 20 doing ASW in the Atlantic (sometimes with Venti on the Essex) until decommissioned a year later (6/62,) then to USS Mills (DER-383) for ASW, surveillance work on the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap and around Cuba, and a year long deployment in support of Operation Deep Freeze off Antarctica.  Circumnavigated the globe as navigator my last year (the 4th) at sea (to New Zealand and the Antarctic via Panama, South America, and Tahiti.  Home via Australia, Suez, the Med and Northern Europe. Both circles, Equator, Prime and 180th Meridians.)  Great job, great shipmates.  Then to NYC for two years ashore working with the Reserves.  Remember the old recruiting slogan:'Join the Navy and see the world'?  I really did. Frank left the Navy in 1967 with the rank of LT.
