1900c  'A View of Park Square from the South.  Ever since it was established in 1791 in a quiet romantic way, Park Square has been the most conspicuous spot in Pittsfield for the historic events connected with it, for its public buildings and until 1861 for its old elm. And so was its site before that date, almost from the organization of the town in 1761. It has an area of about four acres, of which nearly one half is in the little oval park enclosed in the center by her handsome granite coping and shaded by fine elms. In 1872 the monument surmounted by Launt Thompson’s statue of a Union color sergeant – a work acknowledged genuine – was erected, the town expending $10,000 in grading the square and the park. On the left of the picture is Berkshire County Savings Bank building, a costly and imposing office building. Just beyond is the First Congregational church, dedicated July 6, 1853, cost $26,900, capacity 1,100. Next is City Hall, erected in 1832, and at the extreme right, St. Stephen’s Episcopal church built in 1889.'
