The Berkshire County House of Correction on Second Street in Pittsfield, shown above in the late 19th century, was built for $190,000 in 1870, two years after a voter referendum finally affirmed a legislative petition, first filed in 1812, to make Pittsfield, rather than Lenox, the county seat. A condition of the designation was that Pittsfield would provide both a courthouse and jail. The jail was replaced in 2000 by a new facility near Route 8 in Pittsfield.
