This building was still the U.S. Post Office when photo above was taken in 1968. A swap that year allowed Pittsfield’s government functions to move from the overcrowded Old Town Hall on Park Square (now Berkshire Bank) into the much bigger 1911 structure on Allen Street. The Postal Service erected new quarters on an acre of a First Street parking lot that Pittsfield relinquished in exchange for the post office and its site.
